Artisanal businesses are important in job creation, local economies, and cultural heritage. The Craft Sector has contributed billions of dollars to the Canadian economy each year, particularly through tourism and local markets. In 2016, artisanal industries contributed approximately $2.2 billion to Canada’s GDP in the cultural sector, and also contributed significant tourist expenditures.
More consumers are shifting toward values of sustainability, ethical production, and quality craftsmanship. Because of this, artisanal businesses and the products they create are becoming more attractive to consumers. Canada has a number of different support systems for craft and artisan businesses, such as grants, export assistance, and tax credits. For example, the Craft Councils create avenues for the businesses to showcase and sell their products both nationally and abroad.
